Specialist care for older adults

  • Memory problems: dementia or not?
  • Too many medicines: are they all still needed?
  • Involuntary movements: Parkinson’s disease and tremor
  • Rehabilitation after a stroke
  • Poor sleep and depression
  • Diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions together
  • Muscle loss and frailty (sarcopenia)
  • Osteoporosis (fragile bones)

Bringing a parent for the first visit

  1. Come together if you can. A family member who knows their daily routine helps Dr. Ong understand what has changed, and when.
  2. Bring every medicine. All tablets, supplements and traditional remedies, in their boxes or packets. Medicines from different doctors often need to be looked at together.
  3. A comprehensive geriatric assessment. Health, memory, mood, mobility and day-to-day function are reviewed together, rather than one problem at a time. Tests are arranged if needed.
  4. A plan you can follow. You leave with a clear plan for your parent and the family, and regular follow-up as needs change.

What to do next

Outpatient geriatric consultations are usually not covered by insurance, so please plan for self-payment. WhatsApp us the main concern before you come and we will tell you the consultation fee and what to expect, so there are no surprises on the day. You do not need a referral letter to book.

Bring on the day: the patient’s IC, all current medicines, and any referral letter or recent reports.

Common concerns

Memory problems: dementia or not?
Signs families notice
Repeating the same questions, getting lost in familiar places, difficulty with daily tasks, or changes in mood and personality.
Approach
An assessment to find the cause, because not every memory problem is dementia. Some causes, such as medicine side effects or thyroid problems, can be treated. If it is dementia, the plan covers treatment with and without medicines, the patient’s safety and support for the family.
Falls, weakness and unsteady walking
Signs families notice
A fall or near-fall, dizziness on standing, slow walking, weakness in the legs or unsteady walking.
Approach
A fall is often a sign of something else, such as blood pressure dropping on standing, medicine side effects or muscle loss. The assessment looks for the cause and gives practical steps to prevent the next fall, which in older adults can lead to a serious injury such as a broken hip.
Too many medicines
Signs families notice
Five or more regular medicines from several different doctors, or new drowsiness, confusion or dizziness that may come from medicines interacting with each other.
Approach
Every medicine is reviewed together to decide which are still needed, which can be adjusted, and which may be causing side effects or interacting with each other.

Emergency: sudden confusion, sudden weakness on one side, a drooping face or slurred speech can be signs of a stroke. Go to the nearest Emergency Department immediately. Do not wait for a clinic appointment.
